The Importance of Reading

reading

“Students are four times more likely to drop out of school if they are unable to read proficiently by the third grade” – Fact Retriever

Learning the simplest of words can help a child grow mentally. Every where you go and anything you do; you will need the ability to read. By third grade a child should have the capability to understand and read longer texts and fictional chapter books. Understanding beyond just what the word is but what it means and the context around it is crucial during the third grade.

As a teacher you have the ability to tackle the statistic above and help young minds become strong minds. Young students are vulnerable to the two sides of loving learning or hating it, and some do not have the resources at home to continue in their growth beyond the school day. A teacher, substitute, or aide like you could make all the difference in their lives.

“Third grade has been identified as important to reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are ‘reading to learn.’ If they are not proficient readers when they begin fourth grade, as much as half of the curriculum they will be taught will be incomprehensible.” – National Conference of State Legislatures

Third grade is the most important year in comprehensive reading. It is the foundation on which a student will learn the context of words, the meaning behind them, how they flow together, and much more. These are the building blocks of the rest of their education. A student must be able to comprehend these in order to succeed in the grades to follow.
