Personal Traits to Become a Substitute Teacher

You probably already know that it takes special skills to become a substitute teacher. Ideally, you’d have a desire to work with and inspire children, can communicate well, have flexibility and adapt to change, and exhibit patience, kindness, and fairness.

Substitute teachers often enjoy being a new face to encourage and inspire students, enjoy the flexibility to teach many different ages, and look forward to new ideas and changing environments.

Minimum qualifications for Substitute Teacher (Certified)

You can understand that when schools trust us to find qualified teachers to educate their students, we want to assure them that proper employment screening has been conducted. The Renhill Group looks for these minimum qualifications to become a substitute teacher:
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college or university
  • Official copy of college transcript -- sealed
  • Successfully pass a FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and BCI (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation) background check -- must be dated within the past 12 months
  • Negative TB (Tuberculosis) test result – dated within the past 90 days
  • 2 professional references

Minimum qualifications for Paraprofessional and Substitute Aide (Classified):

  • Copy of High School Transcript
  • Successfully pass a FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and BCI (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation) background check -- must be dated within the past 12 months
  • Negative TB test results – dated within the past 90 days
  • 2 professional references

Ideal candidates are those who have a strong desire to work in a school setting and believe in enhancing the lives of children.

Essential abilities to become a substitute teacher:

  • Ability to follow Teacher’s lesson plans
  • Must be reliable.
  • Must be ready and willing to accept assignments without much advance notice (often on the same day)
  • Must adhere to the school district and Renhill's code of conduct at all times.
